Great comments, Pete. It’s a funny time we’re going through in the industry where terminology has become contentious... when all that really matters is that the work is being done to a high standard. Different company cultures result in different titles, and until such times as accreditation is applied to specific titles, we are free to define our own ‘niche’.

’Twas ever thus though. One man’s Art Director is another man’s Senior Designer, etc.

As you say, there are simply people.

Thanks Kit, and hello... and yes, I'm sure we could have a long debate about that, in which you'd probably say something clever and irrefutable (albeit wrong) and I'd end up invoking Godwin's law (albeit legitimately) in response. Good times :)

Good point. And you could replace "brand guidelines" with "the need to consider mobile devices" to make essentially the same point.

Eventually, accessibility will be built in without question, and the failure to do so will mark one as a designer not to be taken seriously. I'm sure that day will come.

And fairly soon.

It's nice to know that the meeting of minds lives on. Do you have copies of the photos you'd be happy to share? Or if they're up somewhere can you point me in their direction? Nice post as ever Pete... (though I'm sure there's a long debate to be had on the idea that memory and photography are concerned with truth).

Good call, Pete. We seem to be scrambling desperately for new industry terminology and buzz phrases these days, but “designed properly” and “fit for purpose” (which, crucially, suggests context) pretty much covers it all.

Thanks Virginia.

I know what you mean - it can be a bit of a juggling act sometimes, especially in situations where you're trying to do both within the same space of time usually allotted to one, which is sometimes the case!

Great post, Pete. I agree that designers should know how to code or definitely understand what's involved in coding an interface they design. Though I have found in my own practice one side never receives the same attention. By having to focus on both parts, I have neglected either the design or the code.
